This type of weapon fire uses a high arc trajectory, lobbing explosives from the firing vehicle to the target vehicle.
The weapons that use this skill are:
Ballistic weapons lose a lot of their accuracy if the vehicle they're fired from is moving and work best against slow-moving or stopped targets.
Ballistic weapons gain a better repeat fire bonus than other types of weapons.
Most ballistic weapons have a range of about 100-120m beyond which the projectile won't go, with mounted mortars being the exception.
